I’m looking forward to dig in.

Then.

I’m still looking for a name for these emails. I just LOVE the name of Scott Galloway’s newsletter, „No Mercy/No Malice.“ (check it out here). Since that one is taken, since I haven’t come up with a similarly edgy-yet-nice title of my own (yet) and since content-wise this isn’t anywhere near the same league (yet?), these remain nameless (for now). Any suggestions?

Finally.

Feedback in the context of leadership (! – not in the general meaning of „response to any input“) is a spicy topic. It seems so hard to give and to receive. Many people appear to be extremely uncomfortable with either or both. And in our line of business, we often take all that discomfort and awkwardness around „feedback“ to 11.

Here is a reframe, that I’ve found incredibly helpful both personally and in the context of my coaching work (HT to Seth Godin, who I heard this from first and who has mentioned it a multiple times across blog posts, books and podcasts; one is here).

When seeing, hearing or saying the word „feedback“, it really helps to think „advice“ instead.

If somebody else wants to „give feedback“, that person is out to give some tips on how things can be better next time. If we’re out to „give feedback“, our task is to make it clear what the intentions and expectations are as well as how our counterpart might go about hitting these more accurately next time.

„Advice“ instead of „feedback“ also serves as a filter. If what’s being said can’t be framed reasonably as advice, very likely it’s not helpful feedback, either. „You suck!“ is a statement, but certainly not advice and almost certainly not effective feedback – and nothing to get too worked up about.

If any feedback received or given fails this „advice test“, it almost always helps to stick around to change that. If we can stay until all involved are clear on what exactly should happen the next time, that gives them and us the best possible shot at making things better.

It’s not always comfortable, but then nobody promised that.

I’d love to hear from you. And if you know somebody else, who might also be interested in this – please share.

All the best,
Malte

First.
